 Windward Water Supply Project

St. Vincent and the Grenadines Windward Water Supply Project

Why the project?
The former sources on the Windward side of the island South of Byrea were all gravity fed systems from small springs and streams. Most of the eight intakes supplying this network of five (5) systems within the project area were more than 40 years old and did not have the capacity to meet the demand of increased housing and other developments, especially in the higher areas. These areas included Diamonds, Mt. Greenan, South Rivers, Park Hill, Cedars, Biabou, Peruvian Vale, Spring and Stubbs

Additionally, there were also perennial water quality problems after heavy rainfall and the threat to water quality posed by farming in and around many of these small intakes.

It was also noted that the Montreal system which supplied Peruvian Vale and Argyle Southwards to Prospect was at its peak capacity and the severe lack of storage throughout the project area meant that there were chronic water shortages during the dry season.

Windward Water Supply Project Description

The major components of the project are the following:

  • Land Acquisition for works

  • Main and emergency intakes upstream of the treatment plant

  • A treatment plant of 1 million gallons per day capacity providing for sedimentation, filtration, and chlorination

  • A Main Storage Tank of 500, 000 gallons plus five other storage tanks each of 50,000 gallon capacity

  • Installation of 21.7 miles of transmission main water pipes, valves and fittings ranging from 3" to 12"

  • Installation of 22.3 miles of distribution pipelines, valves and fittings ranging from 1" to 2.5"

The new Jennings system will directly supply the lower parts of the project area along the Windward coast from South Rivers, Park Hill and Colonarie Southwards to the Diamond Industrial Estate.

The other supply system from Montreal will feed the higher areas of Greggs, Lauders, Lowmans, Chapmans, and New Adelphi.

The new transmission main from the Montreal system is designed to link with the Jennings Valley transmission main at North Union. This will add flexibility and will allow the lower areas on the Jennings system to be served in cases of breakdowns or emergencies on this system.

Population Served
The project is designed to serve a total population of around 22,686.
