The Role of the SWMU
The Solid Waste Management Unit (SWMU) is governed by the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Waste Management Act and Regulations, Act No.31 of 2000. The Solid Waste Management Unit (SWMU) was established in November, 1999 to execute the activities under the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) Solid and Ship-generated Waste Management Project and is also currently responsible for the collection and disposal of Solid waste on St. Vincent and the Grenadines. In addition, the unit undertakes the development of waste management facilities on the Grenadine islands of Bequia, Union Island and Canouan. 

SWMU Mission:
To improve the quality of life for all Vincentians, through the provision of efficient and effective Solid Waste Management Services.

The government of St. Vincent and the Grenadines has enhanced its Solid Waste Management capability, by the establishment of a permanent entity within the Central Water and Sewage Authority.  This entity, the Solid Waste Management Unit (SWMU) has the following responsibilities:  

• Closure of existing dumps (Arnos Vale, Wallilabou, Chili, and FitzHughes), and the construction and maintenance of sanitary landfills on St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

• Provision of collection and storage facilities at ports, harbors, and anchorages for the reception of ship-generated wastes. 

• Ensure the implementation of the new Solid Waste Act.

• Implementation of an intensive Public Education Campaign mainly focusing on Waste Reduction.
