With the planned developments for the area such as the National Stadium, the low-income housing project and shopping facilities, the project is a timely one for the area. It will also ensure that, for the first time in history, septage on mainland St.Vincent will be disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner and after successive rounds of natural treatment. Septage or faecal waste is semi-hardened sludge extracted from septic tanks that are no longer functioning as they should. The raw waste will be delivered to an anaerobic cell which will provide primary treatment. The effluent will then flow by gravity to a facultative cell for secondary treatment before flowing to a maturation pond. The presence of lilies and aquatic life will ensure the destruction of all remaining pathogens and bacteria and will produce an effluent of substantially high quality to be safely disposed of in the environment. This project is expected to be completed by September 2008 at a cost $1.25 Million and is a joint venture between the CWSA and the Ministry of Health and the Environment. .
