The
Solid Waste Management Unit and Composting During the early part of 2002 a regional composting workshop was held in St Vincent, it’s sole aim to equip persons with the necessary skills for the implementation and management of composting projects. Subsequently the NRMU requested that St Vincent and the Grenadines become the focal point for composting in the OECS. A challenge that was readily taken and put in action. We embarked on what is called windrow composting at the Diamond Landfill. This process includes shredded tree limbs, barks, leaves and grass clippings which are placed into rows 5ft in height tapering at the top with a base that is twice as wide as the height. Following sound composting practice, the material is mixed and turned periodically to allow for proper moisture content. Although composting is done at the Landfill, we are still asking residents to plough their green waste back into the soil. We can take so much and no more. The Solid Waste Unit is happy to announce that there is compost available for sale to the public. The public can visit the site at any time to view the project in progress.
